The Medical Laboratory program prepares students for entry-level careers as vital members of the clinical laboratory healthcare team. Medical laboratory professionals play a critical role in patient care by generating accurate laboratory data that support diagnosis, treatment, disease monitoring, and prevention. Students learn to operate advanced biomedical instrumentation and develop strong hands-on laboratory skills that translate directly to real-world practice.

Coursework and clinical training encompass core laboratory disciplines, including clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, and transfusion medicine. Students gain experience performing routine laboratory procedures such as microorganism identification, specimen analysis, blood cell identification, and blood compatibility testing. Learning experiences take place both on campus and in affiliated clinical laboratories, ensuring graduates are prepared with the competencies needed to succeed in professional laboratory settings. Graduates are qualified to work in hospitals, reference laboratories, clinics, physician offices, industrial and environmental laboratories, and quality control settings.

Employment demand for medical laboratory technicians continues to grow at a rate faster than average for all occupations, with Ohio ranking among the leading employers nationwide. The program is fully accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) 5600 N. River Rd., Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018-5119, 773-714-8880, https://www.naacls.org.  Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Admission to the Medical Laboratory program is selective and limited to 20 students annually. Detailed admission requirements and prerequisite information are available at https://www.zanestate.edu/medical-laboratory-technician/

Students in this program will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in the proper collection, labeling, processing, and preservation of biological specimens in accordance with established protocols and safety standards.
  2. Analyze routine clinical laboratory results across multiple disciplines (hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, immunohematology, body fluids) using knowledge of standard laboratory methodologies.
  3. Apply quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) principles to ensure accuracy, reliability, and validity of laboratory test results.
  4. Evaluate laboratory data and correlate findings with clinical conditions to support diagnostic decision-making.
  5. Demonstrate professional behavior, effective communication, and adherence to ethical and legal standards in laboratory and clinical settings.
