3357:12-16-80-1-Promotion Category Activity Chart

This section contains the expectations of faculty in each rank and category along with activity charts to aid in development of the portfolio.

“Exceeding expectations” at one rank is generally seen as performing at the level of the next rank.

“Sustained Performance” generally means consistently performing at the higher level over a number of years. “Sustained Performance” also conveys an element of currency.

One applying for promotion to a higher rank should demonstrate ongoing activity in the category he/she is designating for promotion consideration.

CATEGORY ACTIVITY CHARTS

The following charts are intended to provide guidance to faculty members navigating through the promotion process.

For each category, examples of documentation for the portfolio and focus questions for the narratives are suggested. The examples provided are not exhaustive, and are intended to show some of the primary activities that faculty may be engaged in for each of the categories. It is possible that some activities could logically fall into more than one category, and it would be up to the faculty member to decide in which category to place that activity. However, the same activity cannot be “claimed” in more than one category (i.e., one cannot “double-dip”). For example, giving a presentation at a national conference is listed as an activity under the Scholarship category. However, this activity may instead be claimed in the Service to the Profession category, in support of other primary activities that the faculty member has done in service to his/her profession.
