Course Review and Development Process
Faculty course developers must receive approval from their program Chair, Dean, Department of Online Learning, and the Provost to develop a course for online learning delivery. The Course
Development Approval Form must be completed online and move through the approval process prior to the development phase. Upon receiving approval, faculty course developers will work with the Department of Online Learning to develop the course following the Quality Matters (QM™) checklist. The course approval, design, development, and review processes will serve as a roadmap for high quality online learning.
Course Development Standards/Process
Zane State College has adopted the Quality Matters™ process for course development and review. The Quality Matters Program is a nationally recognized, faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify the quality of online courses. Prior to course development, the Department of Online Learning will provide an introduction to QM™ and provide basic training to the course developer.
The Director of Online Learning will provide the course developer with a list of minimum standards for course development. The course developer will complete and submit an initial self-review of the course to the Director of Online Learning. Courses that clearly demonstrate meeting minimum QM™ standards will be approved for delivery.
The Department of Online Learning will assist the course developer throughout the development process and to complete the QM™ review process. The course developer will complete a full self- review of the course using the QM™ checklist. When the full self-review is completed, the results will be submitted to the Director of Online Learning.
If there are any changes or concerns with the course, the Director of Online Learning will review the recommendations with the faculty developer and help him or her modify the course accordingly.
The Director of Online Learning will convene the Online Review Team to perform a final review after the modifications have been made. If the team determines that QM™ standards have been met, a three-year approval will be granted. If the course developer is not a subject matter expert in the content area, an additional review and approval may be needed from a subject matter expert.
Development Incentives/Compensation
Faculty member is encouraged to work with their chair and dean to discuss incentives/compensation.
Course Periodic Review
Due to the constant changes in technology and pedagogy, courses should be reviewed using a provided QM™ checklist by the faculty member responsible for the course on a three-year basis. Upon completion of the review, the faculty member will forward the checklist to the Department of Online Learning for review and approval by the Online Review Team.
