PURPOSE/CHARTER
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all Zane State College credit-bearing courses are delivered with a clearly defined syllabus that outlines expectations, responsibilities, and course content. The syllabus serves as a contract between the instructor and students, and supports institutional accountability, accreditation compliance, and fair academic practices.
POLICY
All instructors must inform students of course requirements, standards, objectives, and evaluation procedures at the beginning of each course. This information must be distributed digitally through the college’s Learning Management System (LMS) by the first day of class.

- Required/optional textbooks and materials
- College-Wide Learning Objectives
- Topical outline and schedule
- Course outcomes and assessment methods
- Grading system
- Applicable college policies and procedures
- Student resources, rights, and responsibilities
Syllabus Addendum (Section-specific)
- Instructor’s contact information and credentials
- Assignment descriptions and point values
- Grading and testing guidelines
- Attendance and make-up policy
- Classroom expectations
- Semester/term details
- ODHE Transfer Approval (if applicable)
Syllabus Supplement
- A standard college-issued document that outlines current institutional policies and resources for students.
- Maintained by the CAO’s office and embedded in every LMS course shell.
Faculty are responsible for submitting electronic copies of the master syllabus and supplement to their division administrative assistant each term. Any updates to the syllabus addendum are issued by the CAO’s office. In the rare event of mid-semester changes, faculty must communicate these to students in writing and with sufficient notice.
Faculty are required to publish their course in the LMS by the first day of the term. At minimum, the following must be included:
- Preferred method(s) of communication with students
- Expected response time (within two business days)
- Expected turnaround time for graded work (within seven business days of due date) Any exceptions must be communicated to and approved by the division dean.
