3357:12-14-39-Associate of Technical Study (ASTS) Degree Requirements


A.POLICY

 

The Associate of Technical Study (ASTS) degree at Zane State College is designed for students seeking a specialized, individualized program of study that addresses unique career objectives not met by existing degree programs. This policy outlines the requirements for the ASTS degree, aligning with the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) guidelines for Ohio Technical Center (OTC) degree pathways.

 

B.POLICY GUIDELINES

 

Program Approval:

 

  • Students must develop a personalized program of study in consultation with a Program Director or Academic Dean.
  • The proposed program must receive approval from the appropriate Academic Dean and the Chief Academic Officer.

 

Credit Hour Requirements:

 

  • A minimum of 60 semester credit hours is required for degree completion.
  • At least 20 credit hours must be completed at Zane State College to satisfy the residency requirement.

 

Curriculum Structure:

 

  • Major Technical Requirements: A minimum of 30 credit hours in technical courses, with at least 16 credit hours concentrated in a single discipline.
  • General Education and Basic Studies: A minimum of 30 credit hours following the minimum distribution requirements for general education.

 

Grade Requirements:

 

  • Students must earn an overall cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0.
  • For courses identified as major program requirements, students must meet the minimum grade criteria specified for their respective programs, as outlined in the academic catalog. This supersedes the previous requirement of obtaining a minimum grade of “C” in all major program courses.

 

First Year Experience (FYEX):

 

  • Completion of the First Year Experience course is mandatory for all students.

 

Financial and Administrative Obligations:

 

  • All financial dues and other obligations to the College must be resolved prior to graduation.

 

Certification:

 

  • The Registrar must certify that all academic and administrative requirements for the degree have been fulfilled.

 

Alignment with ODHE Guidelines: In accordance with the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s initiatives to streamline credit transfer and support student mobility, Zane State College recognizes the Ohio Transfer 36 (OT36) framework. Students are encouraged to select general education courses that are part of the OT36 to facilitate seamless transfer to other Ohio public institutions, should they choose to pursue further education.

 

C.POLICY HISTORY

 

This policy is effective and applies to all students enrolling in the Associate of Technical Study program from this date forward. Modifications to existing individualized programs of study may be made to comply with this policy, subject to approval by the appropriate Academic Dean.
