3357:12-14-10-Policy on Recognition Programs

A.POLICY
This policy defines the various recognition programs available to students at Zane State College. It establishes the eligibility criteria, selection processes, and forms of recognition for academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement.
B.POLICY GUIDELINES
- All-Ohio Academic Team
- Each year, at least two Zane State College students may be nominated by faculty members for the All-Ohio Academic Team.
- Nominations are submitted in partnership with Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and evaluated at both state and national levels.
- Students may be selected to one of the three state teams.
- Recognition: Students selected to the All-Ohio Academic Team may receive a monetary award.
- Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Membership
- Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is a national honor society for two-year college students.
- Purpose: The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to encourage academic excellence.
- Eligibility Requirements:
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- Must have completed at least 12 college-level credit hours.
- Students meeting the eligibility requirements are invited to join the honor society.
- Presidential Scholar Award
- Purpose: The Presidential Scholar Award promotes and recognizes excellence in academic achievement.
- Criteria for Selection:
- Must have completed a minimum of 36 college-level credit hours after the fall semester.
- Must have at least 31 semester credit hours with grades A-F that are counted in GPA calculation.
- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.95.
- Must have a declared major.
- Must have no violations of the Academic Integrity Policy.
- Recognition: Recipients are recognized at the annual Honors Day event and receive an engraved medallion.
- Students may receive this honor only once during their time at Zane State College.
- Dean’s List
- Purpose: The Dean’s List recognizes students who achieve academic excellence in their studies.
- Criteria for Eligibility:
- Full-Time Students: Must achieve a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher, excluding credit/no-credit courses.
- Part-Time Students: Must achieve a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher and complete a minimum of 9 credit hours, excluding credit/no- credit courses.
- Students who meet the criteria are placed on the Dean’s List for that semester.
- Student of the Year
- Purpose: The Student of the Year Award recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and engagement in college and community activities.
- Nomination Process:
- Faculty from each academic division submit nominations to the Academic Dean’s Office.
- The Chief Academic Officer initiates the nomination process by the 6th week of the spring semester.
- Nominators must submit the student’s name, student ID, and a brief narrative description of why the student is being nominated.
- Criteria for Selection:
- Associate Degree Candidates:
- Must have earned at least 30 semester hours.
- Must have sophomore standing.
- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (full-time or part-time).
- Must be actively involved in college and/or community activities.
- Baccalaureate Degree Candidates:
- Must have earned at least 90 semester hours.
- Must have junior standing.
- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
- Must be actively involved in college and/or community activities.
- Selection Process:
- Each academic division conducts a vote to select the Student of the Year for the division.
- If the division offers a baccalaureate degree, then two students may be selected - one for the associate degree level and one for the baccalaureate degree level.
- Voting is completed before the mid-semester break, and the list of selected students is forwarded to the President’s Office by the 9th week of the semester.
- Recognition:
- Honors Day Recognition: Recipients are honored during the annual Honors Day event.
- Commencement Recognition: Students of the Year who are graduating will be recognized in the commencement program.
- Awards: Recipients receive a framed recognition certificate and a gift certificate.
