HIST 1200 - US History I

United States History I is an introductory overview of United States History, beginning with pre-Columbian Native American cultures and ending with the end of the Civil War. The course will highlight Native American cultures and prehistory, European exploration and colonization, the War for Independence, formation of the United States government, the War of 1812, Jacksonian democracy, economic and cultural forces, slavery, and the causes of the Civil War. Students will examine these topics from political, economic, and cultural perspectives. Students will also learn to distinguish primary from secondary sources and will critically analyze documents. Students will grapple with major historical issues such as the meaning of history, the use of history, the subjectivity of sources, the over and underrepresentation of certain peoples, and evolving historical perspectives.
