Course Type Designations
Courses at Zane State College are identified by a course type designation that indicates the general focus of the course within the curriculum.

G – General Education: Courses designed to provide broad knowledge and foundational skills in areas such as communication, mathematics, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. These courses support the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication and are often transferable to other colleges and universities.

T – Technical: Courses that focus on specialized knowledge and skills related to a specific career or technical field of study. These courses emphasize applied learning and prepare students for entry into the workforce or advancement within a profession.

B – Basic: Courses intended to strengthen foundational academic skills needed for college-level study. These courses may include developmental or preparatory instruction in areas such as reading, writing, or mathematics.
Credit Hour Instructional Time Guide
Zane State College follows the federal definition of a credit hour. Instructional time expectations vary by course type as shown below.

Note: Zane State College operates on a 16-week semester, with the 17th week designated for final examinations. Credit hour calculations are based on 15 weeks of instructional time to account for institutional holidays and other interruptions to the academic schedule. Credit hour assignments are consistent with the federal definition of a credit hour as outlined in 34 CFR §600.2 and institutional policy.
